The conference, which was held recently at the British Library, was co-organised by UEL and the University of London’s Institute of Education and featured talks on studies into food banks, children’s well-being, and welfare reform as well as a successful UEL campaign to introduce the living wage into higher education.

‘Living with the Cuts: Policy, Politics and Everyday Lives in the Recession’ was organised by researchers from UEL’s Centre for Narrative Research (CNR) and the Narratives of Varied Everyday Lives and Linked Approaches research node at the University of London’s Institute of Education.
CNR is the leading international centre for narrative work in the social sciences and is a partner in the ESRC funded NCRM research methods node, ‘Narratives of varied everyday lives and linked approaches (NOVELLA), which conducts research concerned with the everyday practices of families.
In 2010, Tim Hall, principal lecturer in philosophy at UEL, led a campaign to introduce the London Living Wage into higher education. Using his experience as an activist and community organiser, Tim’s work led to UEL implementing the London Living Wage for all of its cleaning staff.
