Athena SWAN Network – Professional Lecture Series: ‘Why are we still here? – Women Scientists in Stratford, East London’

Prof Olivia Corcoran will talk about career progression in and commitment to STEMM subjects at UEL on 11th February 2015 at 1.30pm at the Stratford Campus (AE1.01). Open to all staff and postgraduate students.

International Women’s Day is on 8th March – To celebrate we will be holding a number of events:

• Lunchtime event on Thursday 5th March – 12-2pm at Stratford Campus (AE1.01).Hosted by Dr Sharon Cahill (School of Psychology) and Prof Olivia Corcoran (School of Health Sport and Biosciences). Linked to the Athena SWAN charter and to include a lively debate on how women can plan and take control of their career progression in their respective STEMM professions. Open to all staff and postgraduate students.

• Evening event on Thursday 5th March – 6-8pm at Docklands Campus, Knowledge Dock in collaboration with CEWE. ‘Make it happen!: Technology and entrepreneurship’, following an introductory networking session a panel of leading scientists and business women will answer your questions. Further details to follow.

• Please look out for further events and promotions; we will also be working with the Library and Student Union to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Athena SWAN Network – Professional Lecture Series: ‘Women in STEM: successes and challenges’

We will be welcoming Dame Celia Mary Hoyles, DBE FAcSS, a British mathematician, educationalist and academic on 24th March 2015 – 4-6pm at Stratford Campus. Dame Celia will talk about issues for women in STEM looking back over the years from a personal as well as policy perspective to trace trends in participation — generally but not exclusively from the viewpoint of her subject, mathematics. The talk will be followed by the opportunity to discuss initiatives in the UK and internationally and future agendas. Open to all staff and postgraduate students.
