Horizon 2020: Work Programme Update Published

The current Horizon 2020 Work Programme covers the period of 2014-2015. The European Commission has now published an update to the Work Programme on the Participant Portal.

The 2015 Work Programme is allocating a total of €2.7bn to the Excellent Science pillar, down from €3bn in 2014, and €2.3bn to the Societal Challenges, a decrease from €2.8bn. The budget of the Industrial Leadership pillar will stay the same, at €1.8bn. Though the total budget of Horizon 2020 remains the same at €78.6bn, there are annual fluctuations in funding.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, said: “We are also firing the starting gun on the 2015 calls, and I am confident they will meet equally strong demand.”

A total of 25 calls have been announced under the Societal Challenges pillar, including five for ‘Europe in a changing world’ and four for energy and secure societies. 14 calls have been released under the Industrial Leadership pillar, including five for space and nanotechnology, advanced materials, biotechnology and production.

Additionally, 13 calls have been allocated under the Excellent Science pillar, which includes four calls under the European Research Council. Also unveiled is a new call under the EURATOM Treaty and Horizon 2020’s ‘Fast Track to Innovation’ pilot. This version of the work programme also introduced the five inducement prizes (on reducing the mis-use of antibiotics, food-scanner, reduction of air pollution, collaborative sharing of spectrum and breaking the optical transmission barriers).

The previous version of the Work Programme contained a note, which effectively rendered parts of the Work Programme relating to 2015 (topics, dates, budget) on indicative basis only.

The parts that relate to 2015 have, with this revised version, been updated. Potential applicants will find information on the relevant updates for each call under the ‘Call update’ section of the Participant Portal. For most, though not all, areas of Horizon 2020, the changes are minor and will often relate to the budget allocated to particular parts or be administrative changes.
