The UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) Social Enterprise
Project – Prelude to ALT London Fashion Week
The Royal Docks Business School at the University of East London is pleased
to announce the launch of its first business venture with the YoungStars
Street Label (www.youngstars.me).
YoungStars is a voluntary organisation for young people affected by gang
violence. The focus is to bring peace to the streets by signing up to a
peace pledge. YoungStars want to further their message by releasing a range
of clothing, buyers having to sign up to the peace pledge. The goal is to
be a prelude to the creation of the ALT London Fashion Week.
UEL is also pleased to be building on two successful initiatives in the past
year to support the Young Stars Street Label, the SimVenture business
simulation suite and the mapping of the SimVenture business simulation suite
to an Employability Award with E Squared and SimVenture – UK. This
partnership was created as a base on which the team has been able to build a
UKIERI project with partners in India (The Pearl Academy, SimVenture, Yellow
Sequoia) and a student based initiative built around the Global Scholars
programme (Supported by the Noon Centre), the student Peer2Peer Enterprise
Development Group (CONSENSIO) and the YoungStars.
Using the Enterprise360 model and the award winning UK simulation,
SimVenture, this project will deliver social enterprise training in
collaboration between the UK and Indian partners. The aim is to embed the
model within both the UK and the Indian partner institutions by creating a
link between the Fashion industries of UK and India through following a
product that is designed and sourced locally and fairly (India) for export
to the EU; specifically the United Kingdom.
In June the Global Scholars group from the Business School will travel to
Pearl Academy to develop the next phase of the project. This trip will be
followed by Pearl staff visiting London to develop the requisite process and
procedures with all UK partners. Further staff exchanges will follow and
the project will establish a coherent and sustainable model for fair-trade
based clothing and will expand to other products as the model develops.
