Bethnal Green Memorial Project
We are delighted to announce that Toby Butler of the UEL on behalf of the Raphael Samuel History Centre has been awarded a grant of up to £93,000 from the Heritage Lottery Foundation towards a project to open up, explore and commemorate the history of the Bethnal Green tube shelter disaster in 1943, when 178 civilians were killed when attempting to shelter in Bethnal Green tube during an air raid.
This 18 month project aims to maximise the amount of historical and contextual information available to visitors at the site and use the new memorial as a focus for an ambitious programme of educational and outreach activity concerned with the civilian experience of war. It wants to make sure that East Londoners are aware that this disaster occurred in Bethnal Green, reflect on its significance and ensure that the records and memories of those involved are no longer silenced, but preserved for posterity.
The Raphael Samuel History Centre (http://www.raphael-samuel.org.uk/) is an educational centre devoted to encouraging the widest possible participation in historical research and debate.
