Athena SWAN and Gender Equality at UEL

Over the last year, we have been working on UEL’s Athena SWAN submission. This has involved a self-assessment process to enable a better understanding of gender equality issues currently experienced at UEL. We are coming towards the end of this process and at final stages of drafting our action plan.

We would like to share key achievements as well as the plans to address gender inequality at UEL. Within our action plan we aim to achieve real progress through embedding actions within key UEL agendas and through alignment with the UEL Corporate Plan and Academic Strategy. For example, the academic framework review provides an excellent opportunity to remove barriers to progression and the soon to be launched RKE strategy to address gender imbalances within UEL research outputs. A summary of the key achievements to date and priorities going forward are outlined below. (The full action plan will be made available in due course)

UEL’s Women’s Network, which supports efforts around the Athena SWAN charter, continues to sponsor regular events aimed at promoting gender equality principles. To celebrate International Women’s Day, the Women’s Network offered a career empowerment workshop in Stratford on 7 March which drew more than 60 University employees. The workshop was part of a series of events hosted by UEL to mark International Women’s Day.
